On 9/11, 2001 I stood on the balcony of BBC TV Centre, Southampton watching the live broadcast of the 2nd plane hitting the World Trade Centre.
As it hit, my heart broke, I slid into a very dark hole during the following 5 months. I had returned to work one month earlier after maternity leave. There was no flexibility regarding returning to work back then, full time or bust.
My 7 month old son was in nursery several miles away from me. I would leave home at 7am and return 11 or 12 hours later. I was conforming to what was expected of me in the corporate world and restricted by legislation.
9/11 clarified for me that this was not the way I wanted to live my life as a parent.
February 2002, I finally walked away from the corporate trap with no clue what I would do instead. I simply had a pure, strong gut instinct to make a significant change in my life. April 11th 2002, Domestic Angels opened for business giving me the freedom to be the Mum I wanted to be rather than the parent a corporate entity was prepared to let me be.
I still have that freedom. My ‘why’ has evolved over the years to enabling other parents to have that same freedom via the Domestic Angels franchise, our services and employed position opportunities.
My heart still breaks when I see the picture below. I was trapped but at least I wasn’t trapped on that plane. I was able to release myself.
Where were you on 9/11?
Sam
