Franchising’s Real AI Edge: Confidence, Authenticity, and Women’s Voices
Marketing isn’t difficult for small business owners, including those exploring AI in franchising, because of a lack of available tools. It’s difficult because of feelings and missing skillsets.
For these business owners including franchisees, this can be especially tough. They’re brilliant at running their businesses and caring for customers, but marketing doesn’t always come naturally.
At Domestic Angels, we take that challenge seriously. That’s why we recently delivered our first Marketing with AI
workshop, nudging our franchisees to engage with artificial intelligence in a way that felt safe, practical, and ultimately empowering.
The Franchisor’s Responsibility in the Age of AI
A franchise system isn’t just about operations manuals and checklists. As franchisors, we carry a bigger responsibility: not just providing systems but helping people overcome the barriers that stop them from using those systems with confidence.
Because if franchisees don’t feel able to show up in their communities, no amount of templates or processes will change that.
How AI Builds Confidence in Franchisee Marketing
This is where AI surprised us.
At the workshop, our franchisees discovered that tools like Microsoft Copilot don’t replace their voice. They give it a safe starting point. Instead of staring at a blank page, they had suggestions they could shape into their own style. That shift made all the difference.
Delegates who thought they “weren’t into AI” left with coherent suites of social posts. Nervous marketers produced branded visuals they had refined themselves. Everyone left with scheduled content ready to go, and, more importantly, confidence in their ability to keep doing it.
Why Local, Authentic Marketing Matters in Franchising
Whilst a large chunk of franchise networks lean heavily on centrally produced, one-size-fits-all marketing, we see things differently. Communities don’t all look the same, so why should their local businesses sound the same?
By upskilling our franchisees with AI as an assistant, their marketing stays rooted in their own words, their own neighbourhoods, and their own ambitions without compromising our brand guidelines. That individuality makes their posts resonate far more than anything mass-produced ever could.
We know we are in the business of humans. And humans seek individuality, authenticity, and connection. That’s what stands out, and that’s what AI, used well, can support rather than flatten.
AI Doesn’t Flatten Voices — It Amplifies Them
One of the common fears around AI is that it will make everything sound the same, that humans will be controlled by the machine. In the service sector of franchising, that fear has a particular edge. Nobody wants their business to feel like a clone of every other branch.
But in practice, we saw the opposite. When our franchisees used AI, they didn’t become less human. They became more human, more often. AI gave them the courage to show up regularly and give the head start they needed to write in their own authentic voice.
Instead of replacing individuality, AI supported it. It broke down the barrier of “where do I start?” and allowed each franchisee to express what matters in their own community, to their own clients. That’s not sameness, that’s authenticity at scale.
Women in Franchising Can Shape the Future of AI
AI has been accused, quite rightly, of reflecting bias, including misogyny. But here’s what we noticed at our workshop: the more our female franchisees interacted with AI, the more it began to sound like them. One franchisee who had already been experimenting with Copilot produced outputs that were unmistakably her voice, not a machine’s.
That’s an exciting thought. Perhaps AI becomes less biased, less misogynistic, not by accident but because more women use it. By bringing our voices, our values, and our ways of communicating into the system, we don’t just consume AI. We shape it.
Closing the AI Confidence Gap for Women Business Owners
For some of our franchisees, this workshop was their very first encounter with AI. These women are mothers and grandmothers. They’ve mastered juggling families and businesses, but technology hasn’t always felt like “their world.”
If they weren’t part of our network, how long would it have taken for them to use AI for more than Alexa or a quick Google search? And how many women across the country risk being left behind entirely as this technology advances?
That’s why this matters. When we upskill franchisees, we’re not just making their marketing easier. We’re making sure women have a place in the AI conversation. We’re making sure they’re participants, not bystanders.
Why Support Systems Matter for All Small Businesses
Franchisees in our network have the advantage of structured training and support. We can design modules like Marketing with AI, hold their hands through the first steps, and celebrate their wins together.
But what about the thousands of small business owners who don’t have a franchisor behind them? Many of them are facing the same barriers, fear of technology, discomfort with marketing, lack of confidence, but without the safety net of a network.
That’s where the risk lies: a widening gap between those with access to structured support and those without. Franchising has always been about reducing the risks of business ownership. Now, it may also be about reducing the risk of being left behind in the AI era.
The Future of AI in Franchising: Confidence and Connection
The conversation about AI often focuses on productivity. But in franchising, its greatest value may be psychological: reducing overwhelm, removing barriers, and enabling more people to thrive as business owners.
When franchisees feel confident, they show up consistently. And consistent visibility builds trust, clients, and community.
As franchisors, our job is to prepare people for business ownership in every sense, not just technically, but emotionally too. We have adopted AI to bridge that gap. It’s not about replacing human connection. It’s about giving our people the confidence to start conversations they might otherwise avoid.
